To meet Europe’s carbon commitments, bolster energy efficiency and improve security of supply, electricity grids must be transformed. Smartgrids leverage the latest in communication and information technologiesto give all players real-time information about energy usage and traffic. With smart grids Europe will use energy more efficiently and continue to develop renewables, better predict and protect against interruptions in supply, empower consumers to take control of their energy management, and give the energy industry a vital tool to deliver carbon reductions and optimise the quality of the service they provide.

Concept Grid

EDF R&D developed a cutting-edge testing tool named Concept Grid, which is devoted to smart grid distribution development through integration issue studies. Based at the Renardières site (Seine-et-Marne Department), this unique set of tests enables materials and systems to be subjected not only to reallife operating conditions that mirror those in existing distribution grids, but also to disruption-abundant scenarios. Concept Grid is situated half-way between component testing and field-based grid demonstrators.
