1st section: climate change
Changes in the natural environment caused by human activity started thousands of years ago with the emergence of agriculture and farming. In the 19th century, we entered a new era with industrialisation and the development of long-distance trade, which led to the destruction or fragmentation of habitats, pollution, over-exploitation of resources and the introduction of invasive species. These changes affect all parts of the ecosystem, on land and in both freshwater and seawater environments. Climate change, particularly global warming, by favouring certain species, adds to the aforementioned causes to change the structure and operation of ecosystems. These changes are regarded as "global" as the whole planet is affected and the causes are multiple and interdependent.
