These developments could ultimately have a significant impact, at regional level and possibly on a broader scale, on the equilibrium and flexibility of the electrical system and the optimisation of centralised generation plants, as we move forward into the "post-oil" era. The challenge here is to analyse the interrelated issues of managing demand, generation and storage.

How to take maximum advantage of the manoeuvrability of generation facilities and assure a better coverage of unpredictable energy sources (wind and solar power); also, how to best use distributable storage techniques.

Better manage usage and storage

How to evaluate the economic benefits of demand-side management and storage to reduce peak demand and the investments required in facilities, difficult to make profitable and often fired with coal.
How to flatten the load curve by using price incentives, interactive communication technologies, local heat and/or electricity storage, and possibly the combined use of gas and electricity, to make demand more flexible. Also considering how customers would react to this tighter control of demand.
